Ledge at Devil's Cellar Rapids

The initial ledge at Devil's Cellar Rapids on the Petawawa River.

The definitive guide is "The Petawawa River Whitewater Guide", by George Drought and published by The Friends of Algonquin Park. Its entry on Devil's Cellar Rapids states that this is a grade 5 rapid at all water levels and "... is a mandatory 550 m portage ... The river narrows and descends with massive force into a gorge in one huge chute that turns hard right as it drops. It then runs out into a very steep, ledgy rock garden ... Of interest is the fact that there are still huge rock emplacements standing that were put there for guiding the logs downstream during that era of the Petawawa's history."

Yesterday's photo showed the hard right turn. Note, however, that these photos were taken at relatively low autumn water levels.
