Two Nights on Whitson Lake

2017 Sept 10

Bob and Diana's first canoe trip was to Whitson Lake in 1973 July. We didn't know what we were doing -- and perhaps we still don't -- but we had a great time and were thoroughly hooked on canoe tripping. So when we were looking for a destination to try out our new Cooke Custom Sewing "Lean", Whitson Lake was a familiar choice. The weather was a mixed bag from hot and humid, to light rain, to cool and breezy. But the Lean was a success and we had a good time. Here are some photos:

McManus Lake lake was glassy calm. It was hot, humid and hazy.

The portage from McManus Lake to Smith Lake. Due to the high water levels we thought it would be easier to just portage than to line.

The beginning of the portage into Whitson Lake. It was a challenge to reach the takeout at these water levels.

The fall colours on Whitson Lake. They were much more intense a week previous -- or maybe it's the haze.

This is probably the premiere campsite on Whitson Lake -- level with lots of space. Our new "Lean" is in the background. We really like it but we'll have to try it in less benign conditions.

We camped here 44 years ago. This site has since been decommissioned. Actually, it had probably never been an official campsite even though it had been in use for hundreds of years.

In spite of the high water, the north-eastern channel of Whitson Lake was very obstructed. We got a little farther, but not much. And then it began to rain.

Back at our campsite, under the tarp and watching the rain.

Afternoon coffee. Or maybe soup.

It cleared off but it was cooler. We had had a change of air.
