Early Spring Drive in Eastern Algonquin Park

2018 April 30

We returned to Algonquin Park to check on the status of the melt (For a comparison with 2018 March 26, see An Early Spring Drive into Lake Travers in Algonquin Park). The plan had been to drive into Achray, but the road was blocked at the main road so we continued on to Lake Travers. The park is still frozen pretty solidly, so it was no surprise to learn upon our return that the park opening had been further delayed to at least 2018 May 11.

Looking upstream on the Barron River from the Squirrel Rapids bridge. The river is still ice covered in part between the bridge and Cache Rapids.

Picnic table at Squirrel Rapids. In the summer this is a pleasant location for a break; now, not so much.

The road to McManus Lake. It is still a little early for a comfortable drive in, but perhaps possible in a full 4-wheel drive.

Portage to Barron River at the Brigham Lake access point. However, the portage beyond the snow bank was largely clear or ice covered. There was still some better than boot-top-deep snow at the bottom.

Flooded portage along the Barron River at the Brigham Lake access point. There is slightly less water than a year ago, but comparable.

Campsite along portage at the Brigham Lake access point. It looked as though this site had been used during the winter.

The road into Achray. Clearly the road is quite drivable; they just don't want people going in there yet. We were mentally prepared for a 1km hike from the gate, but not a 5km hike from the main road. We were hoping we could drive all the way in.

Pretty Lake is still frozen pretty solidly. There is only a little discolouring at the shore.

Portage around Poplar Rapids on the Petawawa River. That "snow" is solid and icy. Bob tried walking along here. He didn't bring his crampons. He ended up on his butt, but he didn't slide into the river.

Looking downstream from the Lake Travers bridge on the Petawawa River. The put-in is along the right hand shore in the middle distance. One would need some white water skills at this water level. The large rock needs to be cleared on the left.

Looking into Lake Travers from the Lake Travers bridge, the frozen lake in the distance. When we were here a month ago, we were able to walk out to that big rock on (snow covered) dry land.

The start of the Cheater Trail at the Achray Road. Later in the season you would drive down this section to park by the creek.

Minor rivulet crossing the Achray Road a little outside Algonquin Park. There were several others, some worse from a driving point of view, but this one seemed the most photogenic.
