Sand Bank The Petawawa Sand Plain extends up the Ottawa Valley to about Point Alexander. In this picture it is cut by Unit Creek in the Petawawa Research Forest. The sand was laid down at the end of the last ice age when the Great Lakes (Lake Algonquin) drained through the Fossmill Outlet and down the valley of the Petawawa River creating an immense delta in the Champlain Sea. At that time, the Champlain Sea extended up the Ottawa Valley, perhaps as far as des Joachims (Swisha).
