An Early Spring Drive in Algonquin Park

2024 April 10

On Wednesday April 10, Bob and Diana drove into Algonquin Park via the Sand Lake Gate. This is a yearly ritual for us. This year was a little different in that it involved less hiking and exploring than usual and we didn't drive very far in. Sometimes we will go all the way to Lake Travers but this year, according to the Ontario Parks website, the road was blocked at km. 34. This is somewhat short of the Achray turn off. And as Bob was also having knee issues which precluded extensive hiking and tromping around in the bush, this was basically planned as a sight seeing drive.

We visited Squirrel Rapids, Lone Creek on the McManus Lake Road, our favourite springtime waterfall, the road block at km. 34 and finally Forbes Creek at the Cheater Trail.

The road was in quite good shape from the end of pavement to the Sand Lake Gate. It needs grading -- lots of potholes -- but overall it was dry and for the first time that we can remember for April, nowhere was there water flowing across the road. The dry road continued inside the Park but there were a lot of downed trees on the road. These had been chainsawed through sufficiently to allow a vehicle to pass through but not cleared. It was a bit of a slalom course in places. At km. 34, the road had been washed out. There is only a small creek passing under the road in a culvert here. We surmise that an upstream beaver dam must have burst and the resultant flood overwhelmed the culvert. The washout was not so bad that it would have blocked our 4Runner if we had wished to continue, but we chose to turn around at this point and return to the High Falls Cheater Trail for lunch. We must say that the trailhead for the Cheater Trail has been fixed up considerably since the last time we were here.

On our trip home we saw a single car parked at Squirrel Rapids. This was the only sign of other visitors to the Park that we saw all day.

Here are some photos: some are taken by Bob; some are taken by Diana.
